TNAU students agitate, allege fees as "exorbitant"

Coimbatore, Dec. 19

More than 300 undergraduate students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here demonstrated on the college campus here on Monday (Dec 18) demanding revocation of the hike in arrear examination fees.

The students pointed out that the fee for arrear papers has been hiked from Rs. 200 per paper to Rs. 1,000 for the first attempt. For the second and third attempts the fee ranges between Rs. 2,000 and 3,000.

"Many of us hail from poor families and we are studying because of educational loans. While this is the case, TNAU being a government university has been imposing huge fee on students", a student said.

Following the agitation, tense situation prevailed on the TNAU campus.

Speaking on the issue, Dr. Sudhakar, Registrar of the university, said "We were forced to increase the fee from Rs. 200 to Rs. 1000 because the students were not taking the arrear examinations seriously. The fee of Rs. 200 per paper for appearing for arrears is regarded very low by the students. They do not inform their parents regarding their arrears. Hence, to bring about earnestness and sincerity among the students the fee structure was hiked".

Students withdrew their protest after the Registrar promised to revoke the revised arrear fee structure.
